What is Relational Trauma?

Relational trauma refers to the psychological and emotional wounds that result from harmful experiences in significant relationships - often those meant to be safe, supportive, or foundational. These wounds can stem from childhood (e.g., neglect, emotional invalidation, inconsistent caregiving) or adulthood (e.g., toxic partnerships, betrayal, emotional manipulation).

  • What is psychotherapy? and how does it work?
Psychotherapy is a collaborative process where a trained therapist helps individuals explore and address emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. It involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. How it works: Initial Assessment: Your therapist will gather information about your challenges and goals. Therapeutic Techniques: Based on your needs, the therapist will use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Narrative Therapy (NT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and more. Ongoing Sessions: You’ll work together to identify patterns, develop coping skills, and set goals for personal growth.
  • How often should I come to therapy?
Consistency is key, especially in the beginning. For most people, weekly sessions are recommended to build momentum and establish a strong therapeutic foundation. This frequency allows for steady progress and helps you stay focused on your goals. As therapy progresses, the frequency of sessions can be adjusted based on your needs and progress. You and your therapist will work together to determine the best schedule as you move forward.
  • What can I expect during the free 15-minute consultation?
During your free 15-minute consultation, you can expect an introductory conversation where we’ll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your goals, and any initial concerns you may have. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about the therapy process, learn more about your therapists approach, and determine if you're a good fit to work together. It’s a low-pressure conversation designed to help you decide how best to move forward with your therapeutic journey!
  • What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice. This allows us to offer the time to someone else who may need it. Cancellations made within 24 hours will incur a cancellation fee. If you need to reschedule, we will do our best to accommodate a new time that works for you. To notify us of any scheduling changes, please free free to email us at atriapsychotherapy.info@gmail.com or call/text at 1-807-699-9858.
  • How many therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, the nature of the concerns you are working on, and how frequently you want to meet. Research shows that, on average, clients report progress after 15-20 sessions. However, some individuals may benefit from longer-term support, especially when working through deeper issues or achieving more complex goals. In the beginning, your therapist will help you set goals and evaluate your progress. Together, you'll determine the best course of action and frequency based on your needs, adjusting as you move forward.
